More than 30 types of pneumonia are grouped based on the cause (Mackenzie, 2016). The most common types include viral, bacteria, and mycoplasma. It is an infection inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs. Based on cause classification, viruses and bacteria are the leading cause of the condition. The current paper is a summary of the pathophysiology of respiratory disease.
Causes & Symptoms
According to the CDC (2020), fungi, viruses, and bacteria are significant causes of pneumonia in the USA. Influenza and SARS-CoV-2 are common viral causes, while Streptococcus pneumonia is the bacteria that causes the disease. However, clinicians cannot always tell the germ that caused the disease in a particular patient (Jain, Vashisht, Yilmaz, & Bhardwaj, 2021). People can be infected with pneumonia either within the community (community-acquired) or within health facilities (healthcare-associated). The key symptoms of the disease include shortness of breath, chest pain when breathing or coughing, cough with phlegm, fever, sweating, shaking, chills, fatigue, and confusion or alterations in mental awareness.
