Parenting is unique in that it is a culmination of several factors, including learned behavior (what we learned from our parents), peer influence, formal training/education, social-economic factors as well as cultural traditions. There are, however, some common elements in regards to parenting such as the ones described by Baumrind in 1966.

Baumrind's first identified authoritative parenting, authoritarian parenting, and permissive parenting styles. Active and nurturing parenting style is associated with better child development outcomes in childhood and adolescent phases of development. Attachment-focused parenting is responsive to children and focuses on enhancing security and improving the parent-child relationship (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 2021). It is associated with emotional connection and physical availability appropriate to children's moods and feelings (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 2021). While there has been a gradual growth in those who support free-range parenting, strict parenting is still popular, and one of the issues of contention is what freedom parents should give their children and at what development stage. 
The authoritarian parenting style tends to impose authority on children. Since children have to follow what they are told, they are not allowed to solve problems independently, and there is a sense they are controlled.
