Tobacco Use in the United States
Name
Institutional Affiliation Reducing Tobacco Use Among Adults
Overview of the community health issue
Today's tobacco use has exponentially increased due to a lack of sufficient knowledge by communities about the impacts the drug has on their bodies. Millions of people worldwide have easy access to tobacco products which exposes them to the risk of developing health complications such as lung cancer (Benowitz et al., 2020). Companies producing tobacco products often avail them to their customers across different points of the world. However, their efforts to remain in business have also impacted young individuals who also have easy access to tobacco products. Furthermore, the companies' lack of sensitization on maintaining low tobacco intake also contributes to the users' increased level of negligence and ignorance (Jamal et al., 2017). It is common to identify adults spending a significant part of their income on tobacco products on most occasions.
While the resources could be injected into useful projects, most tobacco users are often unwilling to forfeit their habits. The financial expenditures may be too high in the long run while trying to cater to their medical needs. Countries like United Kingdom, Nepal, Malaysia, and China have a high tobacco consumption rate (World Health Organization, 2017). Thus, the governments try to educate the users on the need to understand tobacco consumption's health implications. Therefore, policies that include printing the health risks of tobacco products on the packaging have been introduced in countries that register a high drug consumption level (World Health Organization, 2017). However, at the community level, most people still overlook the consequences of using tobacco and continue to consume in high amounts.
Prevalence of the issue
The increased use of tobacco is global and continues to affect the health of adults in different ways. One of the most common complications that arise from the use of tobacco products includes breathing problems, lung and throat cancers. In the United States, hundreds of thousands of people smoke cigarettes and other substances that contain tobacco (Jamal et al., 2017). The government endeavors to ensure that they get educated about the risks they are exposed to.
This includes introducing strict policies and incorporating social workers' services to reach out to the community level. It is projected that due to the increase in the amount of tobacco production and processing in the United States, more people are likely to start or continue consuming the products in the long run (Jamal et al., 2017). With the help of people who understand tobacco products' health implications, the situation can be resolved whereby the users can be introduced to therapeutical measures to reduce their consumption rate.
Research indicates that about 15% of adult males and females within the United States either use tobacco products or have done so in the past (Jamal et al., 2017). Only about 4% of such population resort to seeking therapy and counseling to cease using them. In the future, if drastic measures are not taken, then more people may be vulnerable to the increased use of tobacco use. This is an issue that the U...
