Understanding an organization’s tendency to change is essential for any healthcare professional. It allows him to be adaptive to the strengths and opportunities of an organization that could be used in the implementation of his plan of action. Accordingly, one of the essential factors for change is the organization’s culture. Organizational culture is simply defined as “the collection of values, expectations, and practices that guide and inform the actions of all team members.” In line with this, this paper will analyze the organizational culture of Eisenhower Medical Center CITATION Won20 \l 1033 (Wong, 2020). This includes the organizational structure, team performance and engagement, and other aspects that are related to change. Nonetheless, it is the author’s belief that knowing these salient points of a medical organization is crucial for a more effective EBP (Evidence-based Practice) intervention.
Eisenhower Medical Center
Eisenhower Medical Center (EMC) is a not-for-profit, Level 1 trauma center located in Rancho Mirage, California, United States. As of its latest report in 2020, the hospital has about 463-beds and comprises multiple buildings and annexes that house its various departments CITATION Eis20 \l 1033 (Eisenhowerhealth.org, 2020).
In line with EMC’s non-profit organization, it has the primary mission of “[serving] the changing health care needs of [the] region by providing excellence in patient care with supportive education and research” CITATION Eis20 \l 1033 (Eisenhowerhealth.org, 2020). This is the reason why some EMC departments (i.e., Eisenhower Desert Cardiology) have been actively involved in research studies, ranging from healthcare provision to administration, among others.
In line with the EBP intervention proposed for this research, the author believes that EMC’s culture is very receptive and supportive of changes based on research. This is because of its mission and vision and based on the author’s observation of how changes and improvements were implemented in the workplace.
In addition to this, EBP interventions can be effectively implemented in this healthcare setting. EMC’s organizational structure is hierarchical, whereas its interdepartmental relationship is very dynamic. Each department (and other stakeholders) are encouraged to actively participate in EBP improvements provided that there is sufficient research, funding, and permission from each department head. Since protocols mandated by the administrators must be followed, these protocols developed from research provide ample ground for testing and implementing them.
Aside from the structural and organizational culture, another reason for the effectiveness of these interventions is the personal and professional inclinations of the staff. Since EMC is an accredited teaching and research hospital, its members are predisposed to experimenting, learning, and applying the new information into the current practices in the workplace CITATION Eis20 \l 1033 (Eisenhowerhealth.org, 2020).
Nonetheless, the author would still like to use the Or...
