Why Many Women and Men Participate In Activities That Support Rape Culture When They See Their Injustices
Rape culture is where rape is seen as ordinary due to society's perspective on sexuality and gender. The culture of rape involves blaming the victims, describing females as being obedient and sexually inactive, and males as prevalent and sexually aggressive. Assuming ill-behaved women are the ones who get raped, and men don't get raped; thus, when it happens, they are weak. Others include declining to take rape charges seriously, educating women to evade being raped rather than instruct men not to rape, tolerating sexual harassment and bad sex jokes. Many women and men participate in activities that support rape culture when they see their injustices for several reasons. For example, it can be due to peer pressure that leads to fear of condemning the act and being ashamed to speak up about the injustice of rape.
Peer pressure has a lot of influence on an individual's views of rape culture. It is evident that in areas where students drink alcohol, they probably become casualties or perpetrators of rape culture (Mkhize et al., 2020). More so, they manipulate each other's behavior by supporting and encouraging sexual violence. It can also result in students not snitching on matters regarding rape in such an environment. Alcohol consumption, especially in fraternity parties (high-risk houses) in colleges, is a major player in the rape culture. Here, men are in charge of parties and have authority over the women who attend. Some of the victims of rape are not even aware of what happened because they were under the influence of alcohol and other drugs.
