Institution:
Nursing Theories for Nursing Concepts
Introduction
Nursing concepts such as hygiene, self-care and comfort rely on concepts nursing theories propose for actualization in healthcare practice. The different theories have various utilities in nursing based on the needs of a patient. The application of theoretical notions also depends on the nature of a care plan a patient will use. This paper seeks to explore on Orem’s self-care deficit theory, and its effectiveness in self-care nursing concept.
Background of the Theory
The Orem’s Model of Nursing theory was developed in the mid-fifties and early 2000. The development of the theory was focused to addressing and improving the quality of patient care in health facilities within her locality (Petiprin, 2016). The theory as grand nursing theory suggests that human beings can easily adjust to their environment. The model allows practitioners to view the aspect of self-care amongst patients in a myriad of ways, such that medical personnel can implement the model in different ways according to the phenomenon in application. The model is founded on six major assumptions (Petiprin, 2016). People should take responsibility for their individual care and of their families when in need; and be self-reliant. People are separate individuals. Nursing is an action in the form of interactions between two people or more. Primary care, ill health, and prevention comprise of successful accomplishment of development and universal self-care requirements. Promotion of self-care tendencies requires knowledge of individual potential health problems. The framework of the theory is built on recognition of the needs of patients to be involved in their healthcare.
Major Theory Concepts
The critical concepts raised by Orem include; Human, environment, nursing, and health. Humans are considered as integrated self-reliant individuals with capability to reflect and use codes and can be distinguished from one another at ease. The individual can reflect between themselves and their environment as well as symbolize on their experiences. The individuals can create symbolic creations such as ideas and words in communicating, thinking, and directorial actions, which are valuable to themselves and for others. She further asserts an overall being with coherent powers, universal and developmental needs can attend to their needs and the wellbeing of his dependents (Shah, 2015).
On the other hand, the concept of health entails the state where an individual is structurally and functionally sound. Further, health is an obligation of society, and the community plays a critical role in health promotion and maintenance. It entails the integration of physiological and psychophysiological approaches and material structure to enhance the interaction with other persons. Third, nursing is an art that incorporates...
