Adverse reactions to medication in dentistry account for ten to twenty percent of patients in hospitals. The reactions occur due to the pharmacodynamic properties of a drug, allergies or pseudoallergic reactions.
Dentists utilize various medications. According to Cleveland Clinic, dentists use pain and anxiety relievers such local and general anesthesia, nitrogen oxide, intravenous sedation and analgesics such as ibuprofen, morphine, and codeine to control and relieve pain. Anti-inflammatory medicine, corticosteroids, such as Orabase, Oralone, and Tylenol ease discomfort and reddening of the mouth and gums. Antibiotics such as penicillin and amoxil prevent infections during dental procedures while antifungal medication such as nystatin treats oral cavity, thrush, and fungus (Cleveland Clinic, 2017, Apr 4).
Different drugs present various toxicity when their administration is in high dosage.
