PICOT Question Paper
Review your problem or issue and the study materials to formulate a PICOT question for your capstone project change proposal. A PICOT question starts with a designated patient population in a particular clinical area and identifies clinical problems or issues that arise from clinical care. The intervention used to address the problem must be a nursing practice intervention. Include a comparison of the nursing intervention to a patient population not currently receiving the nursing intervention, and specify the timeframe needed to implement the change process. Formulate a PICOT question using the PICOT format (provided in the assigned readings) that addresses the clinical nursing problem.
The PICOT question will provide a framework for your capstone project change proposal.
In a paper of 500-750 words, clearly identify the clinical problem and how it can result in a positive patient outcome.
Describe the problem in the PICOT question as it relates to the following:
Evidence-based solution

PICOT QUESTION: Nursing Shortage effect on Patient Outcomes
Problem
The nursing shortage is a global health challenge. The shortage of nurses in the healthcare system is one of the teething problems that have existed for a long. The shortage of nursing care has far-reaching implications on healthcare delivery to patients. Nurses form a critical part of healthcare and constitute the largest healthcare workforce (Haddad, Annamaraju, & Toney-Butler, 2020). For effective delivery of care for the whole population, groups, communities, and individuals, skilled nurses are needed, but the inadequacy of well-prepared and educated nurses continue to pose problems. Nurses are in high demand to educate and care for increasing populations of communities, patients, and hospitalized with diverse chronic conditions such as arthritis, dementia, hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. The nursing workforce shortage is a critical concern in the U.S health system. More often, increasing demand for nurses does not match supply. The issues such as an aging nurse workforce, an increasingly more knowledgeable patient population whose expectation on quality of care is high, nursing retention challenges, the baby boomers advance in age, and ever-rising healthcare costs have exacerbated the problem associated with a nursing shortage (Buerhaus et al., 2017).
The nursing shortage has a profound impact on patient outcomes. The available nursing staff is a force to work longer hours than usual, leading to a stressful work environment, increased dissatisfaction amongst staff, increased risk of injuries, prevalent fatigue, and increased incidence of medical errors and making mistakes. Evidenced-based findings showed that greater nurse-patient ratios were linked to the increased extent of burnout amongst nurses, a mere increase of one patient to patient-nurse ratio was linked to an 8% rise in job dissatisfaction, and nurses’ retention rates were poor when there is a low nurse-patient ratio (Shin, Park, & Bae, 2018). This adverse outcome has ripple effects on patients’ health outcomes in terms of morbidity, mortality, and prognosis (Walker, 2017).
