Nurses' ultimate objective is to provide patients with high-quality, patient-centered care. Every individual may require a unique approach, which may be especially difficult when dealing with someone recently faced with a life-changing cancer diagnosis. According to the American Cancer Society (2018), there will be around 1,800,000 new cancer diagnoses in the United States, with 600,000 deaths. Cancer is a disease that affects everyone, including the sufferer, family, and even friends. This paper aims to look into cancer diagnosis and staging, as well as complications and treatment options. It will also go over physical and psychological side effects, contributing factors to mortality rates, and nursing care and education used to care for patients while using the nursing process.
Diagnosis and Staging of Cancer
Since each kind of cancer is different, it will appear with its symptoms and necessitate different diagnostic approaches. Screenings and prevention are two of the most important things a person can do because the sooner cancer is detected, the better the prognosis. One of the most effective techniques to detect a change in your tissue is to do self-examinations (Kim & Kim, 2020). There is a range of processes available to assist in detecting cancer, such as mammograms, which are used to detect any thickening of the breast tissue, and endoscopic examinations of the colon, which can provide accurate pictures of any polyps that may turn cancerous.
Signs of cancer can also be found in the patient's history, such as rapid unexplained weight loss or increase, unhealed wounds, or inexplicable bleeding. Therefore, many tests will be conducted if a patient has cancer, including laboratory testing, MRIs, and CT scans (Kelly et al., 2020). If a tumor is discovered by imaging, a biopsy or surgical excision will be performed to collect the tissue for further evaluation. When a cancer diagnosis is confirmed, the cancer is classified according to its size and whether it has spread or metastasized.
There are a variety of cancer staging systems, and the information provided by these systems includes the location of the tumor, its size, whether it has spread, and the cell type. In hospitals and medical facilities, the TNM staging method is the most extensively utilized. The T represents the size of the tumor and extension (Kelly et al., 2020). The N represents the total of cancerous lymph. The M stands for whether or not cancer has extended to other parts of the body. When utilizing the TNM staging method to characterize cancer, each of these letters will be accompanied by a number that will provide further information about cancer. For example, if a y follows the letter, no measurement is observable. If the number is zero, it signifies cancer hasn't spread or can't be discovered. The numbers 1-4 will allude to the size, location, and whether or not it has spread to a particular extent. The greater the tumor's grade, the more aberrant and fast-growing it is.
