The nursing phenomenon can be a personal health status, self-care, and nursing practice(s) theory related to experiences within the nursing work environment. There are several phenomena nurses experience (School of Nursing, University of Maryland, Baltimore, 2019). The following are some examples of nursing phenomena: professional burnout, compassion fatigue in direct care, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) concerning nursing.
As Fountouki (2022) states, “Burnout is a syndrome defined by emotional exhaustion leading to depersonalization and reductions in personal accomplishments at work” (p.1), explaining how physical and mental exhaustion can affect performance in the work environment. Short staffing, unrealistic job expectations, inadequate work conditions/medical supplies, and high-stress work environments are some of the circumstances contributing to burnout in the workplace. This can directly affect the patient(s) by lack of conscientious care by the nurse.
The nurse may feel excited about starting a new job with positive expectations of the workplace and responsibilities. With time some of the factors mentioned previously can steadily create fatigue, and feelings of powerlessness causing discouragement in the nurse. It can cause the nurse to develop an unpleasant approach to patients and colleagues. The nurse may experience the feeling of devalued in the workplace leading to job dissatisfaction, resigning, or quitting the job.
Wang (2020) states, “PTSD is a mental disorder that may develop after exposure to exceptionally threatening or horrifying events”, the COVID-19 pandemic exposed healthcare workers to the awful life-threatening effects it had/has on humanity. The traumatic events left many nurses exposed to the life-threatening virus which can lead to anxiety. There are several units in which nurses may be experiencing exposure to patients’ trauma and losses. The nurse(s) may have inadequate tools on ways to cope with these experiences, this can cause nurses to develop negative coping mechanisms.
Compassion fatigue in direct patient care from the nurse(s) as Salmond (2019) states, “The cumulative demands of experiencing and helping others through suffering have been considered to contribute to the potential of compassion fatigue”. In nursing, experiencing a sense of compassion and satisfying action comes from helping others through their time of need but without the tools to maintain a work-life balance, it can lead to a lack of empathy for patients. From the nurse who is caring for the patient, it becomes interventions and task-based focus with desensitization of how the patient and their family are being affected.
The nursing phenomena can directly affect patient care such as a lack of emotional support to the patient, the patient may feel/experience dissatisfaction with the care provided. A high-stress environment can lead to miscommunication or misunderstanding between the nurse and the patient.

Caregivers usually witness the bearings they have on people’s lives when they help patients recuperate from injuries and ailments. Nurses often experience psychological struggles and pain due to observing patients suffer and die (Yeşil & Polat, 2023). Later the above experiences may lead to burnout, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or compassion fatigue.
Nurse burnout and compassion fatigue are different, with some close similarities. For instance, burnout results from physical and emotional tiredness that comes with the demanding responsibilities mandatory in the nursing profession. However, compassion fatigue arises due to amassed emotions that hinder empathetic care. Moreover, fatigue expresses itself much faster and quicker than burnout, and it can cause observed hopelessness or even anger (Yeşil & Polat, 2023).
