Medicaid in the United States is a healthcare program that covers individuals from low-income families. The program is a partnership between the federal government and the state and aims to ensure that citizens from low-income families can access quality medical services and facilities. The program is managed by state governments which determine who is eligible to benefit from the program. The State of Texas is the second largest state in the United States. In order to qualify for the state’s Medicaid program, one must be an American born citizen or a legal resident, and must be residing in the State of Texas. The eligibility groups are divided into adults, pregnant women, and the old and the disabled.
The eligibility requirement for adults is based on whether they have a disability, are caring for children or are older than 65 years. For adults caring for a child to receive Medicaid in the state of Texas, they must be living with the child, and the child’s age must be below the age of majority (Kim, 2014). The adults must also have a family income not exceeding 18 percent of poverty level, which is approximate $3600 per year. Medicaid is also available to former foster care children in the state of Texas aged between 18-25. Texas also provides Medicaid benefits to low-income pregnant women. This arrangement covers pregnant women with little or no income. The pregnant women who are eligible must have a household income not more than 18 percent of the poverty level. The aged, the blind, and the disabled are also covered by the State of Texas Medicaid program.
The eligibility requirements for the low-income pregnant women, the aged, and the blind are reasonable and are likely to cover a great number of needy citizens.
