Essay Instructions:

Using the Data/Information/Knowledge/Wisdom Continuum
The developed question that is relevant to my practice area is as follows: has implementing the use of the electronic medication administration records (eMAR) increased the safety of the administration of drugs within the hospital setting? This paper displays the sequence during the data, information, knowledge, wisdom continuum which takes place through research information in answering the developed clinical question which is pertinent to nursing in an acute care setting: eMAR in acute care setting.
The question: has implementing the use of the electronic medication administration records (eMAR) improved the safety of medication administration in the hospital setting?
An eMAR is understood as technology which automatically documents the administration of medicine into certified Electronic Health Record technology with the use of electronic tracking sensors such as radio frequency identification or electronically readable tagging for instance bar coding (Moen & Knudsen, 2013). eMAR essentially enlist bar coding technology in submitting and filling prescriptions with hand-held scanners which read bar codes and then send them out to the workstation/terminal with the use of Bluetooth wireless technology. The Electronic medical administration records relay data about dosage of medication to the pharmacy that is then connected to nursing stations (Topaz, 2013).
Working through the steps of the data, information, knowledge, wisdom continuum
Nursing data would be collected during the practice of nursing through client-nurse interactions, observation, test-results, family disclosure and treatment. They can also be collected from various nursing databases. Data are essentially discreet entities and they are usually described impartially without any interpretation (Topaz, 2013). They are the discreet factors that describe the patient and/or the patient

Nursing Informatics and Safety of Drug Administration
Electronic medication administration records (eMAR) have significantly increased the safety of drug administration and they have already been proven to drastically enhance the safety of patients and minimize the time that is applied during the process of documentation. Studies have shown that the use of eMAR has reduced the rate of medication administration errors by 33% and reduced documentation time by 45% (Agrawal, 2009). This is a clear indication that electronic health records (EHR) play an instrumental role play and when it comes to gathering crucial data, information, knowledge, and wisdom continuum, particularly when it comes to drug administration in acute care settings (Ingram, 2007). Studies have also revealed that eMARs enable nurses and other healthcare professionals to document the administration of drugs, important symptoms as well as other observations. This also enables healthcare settings to have immediate alerts, especially when a patient arrives and thus enable physicians to conduct immediate clinical actions.
Patient results are usually displayed on the eMAR screen and it can further be transmitted through the email or pager and then recorded in health care reports or displayed on an integrated status board. Evidence also shows that the information that is displayed on the status board is also available at the nursing stations as well as the procedures that should be performed on a specific patient (Guo, et al, 2011). Therefore, a clinician will be in a position of analyzing if there are any medical evaluation needs, overdue medications, and any other important information that should be observed. Therefore, a nurse will be in a better position of conducting important procedures that are required without having to go to computers to perform additional research. This implies that the information that is displayed by eMARs tend to reduce the strain and also reduce missed administrations as well as different care omissions to a patient.
