Cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) are commonly known as a stroke. This is caused by interruption of blood flow going to the brain which leads to an abrupt loss of neurological functioning. There are different types of strokes depending on which blood vessel and what part of the brain was affected.
Major risk factors for cerebrovascular accidents include heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus. Hypertension can cause cerebrovascular disease because of blood pressure. It causes the flow of blood to increase and therefore causes the arteries in the brain to rupture. Risk increases with having a blood cholesterol level of 240 mg/dL or more, which is known as hypercholesterolemia. The fats may accumulate inside the arteries that can block the normal flow of blood, resulting in a stroke. Lipid profiles should also be noted as risk factors such as elevated LDL (Low-density lipoprotein) and low levels of HDL (high-density lipoprotein). It has been found out that disorders of heart rhythm are a powerful risk factor for stroke (O’Sullivan, Schmitz, & Fulk, 2019).
Modifiable risk factors for stroke include a sedentary lifestyle, cigarette smoking, unhealthy diet, and obesity. There is a different kind of food diet but taking food that is rich in salt and saturated fat can cause high blood pressure that is also one of the risk factors. Non-modifiable risk factors include age, gender, family history, and race (O’Sullivan, Schmitz, & Fulk, 2019).
