Donald Trump's election as the 45th President of the United States was nothing less than a surprise to journalists, voters and analysts. No one expected that he would become the president of the country as most of the people had kept their eyes on Hillary Clinton. The New York Times and other news outlets favored Hillary Clinton and were of the view that she had a 95 percent chance of winning the White House. However, things changed all of a sudden when Donald Trump took the control of the office, and right after that, he called began blaming media for all of the controversies and failures of the United States. To Donald Trump, social media and news channels are a big threat to society. However, I think that it is because of news channels and social media that we have been able to connect with the world.
First of all, social media especially Facebook and Twitter are an excellent way to promote brands, businesses, products, and goods. These days, a lot of Americans are using these platforms to target customers worldwide and to sell their products or goods to earn a living. Whether he is a freelancer or an established businessman, it is very easy for an American to turn to social networking sites to speak of his mind, to meet new people, to market services for cheap, and to get more and more orders.
Secondly, Donald Trump’s statement that news channels should be banned is out of context. The fact is that mass media keeps us connected with the world. When we turn on the television and begin watching a news channel, we get to know what is happening in the world and what types of controversies are ruining the people’s life. For instance, when a tsunami strikes or the signs of earthquake become visible, people all over the world including Americans hear about it and can easily prepare themselves for consequences. Without news channels, we would have never been able to know all this.
Another prominent benefit of social media is that people use it to manage stress and depression. Let’s us imagine that we are alone at home and there is no one to talk.
