Description of The Database
Reliable information on the use of ambulatory medical services in the United States is provided in the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NAMCS). Data are collected from ambulatory care utilities in hospital environments through the National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey (NHAMCS). The emergency departments, ambulances, and operating centers are part of these settings. The NAMCS results are based on visits to office-based doctors whom the federal government does not employ. These doctors take part in direct patient care predominantly and regularly. In 2006, visits to community health centers were used to create the results of the survey. Nationally and based on visits to emergency services, ambulatory departments, and hospitals, the findings of NHAMCS are established.
Type of Data
The survey section is based on national visits to hospital emergencies, except federal, military, or vet services. NAMCS results are obtained from office-type physicians who participate in mainly indirect care for the patient. The survey excludes specialized physicians.
Years for Which Data is Available
In 1973, the survey started, and two types of data were developed from 1973 to 1991, one for a patient visiting information and the other for medication therapy. From 1992 to 2011, a single type of data file containing all previous patient visits and pharmaceuticals was created. There was also a further file in 2012 to include high-performance practitioners as well as doctors. The hospital-based outpatient clinic data collection began in 2009. Data was collected in freelancing ambulatory surgery centers between 2010 and 2012 by the NHAMCS (National Center for Health Statistics, 2021). The survey began focusing exclusively on ambulatory visits to emergency services in 2018.
