The primary goal of professional organizations is to unite people with related professions and to build a connection or network where these people could interact with. Being a member of a professional organization means that you are part of a bigger community. As a professional, you need to become a part of an organization because it is the key element of being a professional CITATION ABR20 \l 1033 (ABRID, 2020). Most importantly, being a part of that organization is the quickest way to be informed of the several advancements of your profession to be aware of the changes in your chosen career.
One of the nursing organizations at present is the National Association of Directors of Nursing Administration in Long Term Care (NADONA/LTC). NADONA was founded in 1986 in St. Louis, MO. It only had 40 members from 13 states at that time. The core values of NADONA are to provide exceptional customer experience, interprofessional collaboration, integrity, professional advancement, diversity, and inclusion.
Being a director of nursing is a job that requires leadership skills to direct the nursing staff and to provide efficient or appropriate coordination of services offered by nurses. Leadership is the principal skill that any director should have. However, the importance of continuing education and networking opportunities should be kept in mind because a leader should always be knowledgeable of other developments in nursing to be able to provide means to contribute as well to make the services even better.
The benefits of the members of this organization are as follows: Academy of fellows, Mentor System, Scholarships, Chamberlain College of Nursing, Certification Programs, Educational Conferences, NADONA Annual Conference, The Director, and Caring for the Ages.
To address education and continuing professional development, free access to continuing education (CE) courses on nursing topics, practice resources, educational scholarships, and discounts on CEN exam fees for certification and re-certification, online education, products, and merchandise, are the offered services of NADONA. NADONA provides a lot of free access and discounts to help these professionals in expanding their knowledge. This is quite an important aspect of a professional organization because not all of the knowledge gained in school can still be stored and remembered fully by these professionals. In this way, nurses will have a way to refresh their minds and learn new things that were not tackled at school.
As the world is changing drastically, health care professionals should evolve as well because this will help shape the future of the health care setting. Evolvement means nurses should also become aware of what is going on around the health care setting so that appropriate continuing professional developments will be made to cater to all these needs.
