Multicultural Communication and its Origins
Culture refers to customs, ideas, and social behaviors that guide ethical and moral existence. They make up what certain people believe and practice in their daily lives. Multicultural communication happens when people from diverse social, tribal, religious, ethnic, racial, and geographical locations interact (Bin-Tahir et al., 2017). Communication is inevitable in these interactions. Therefore, the communication between and among various cultures is multicultural communication. People exist in stratifications that were initially confined in certain regions defined by barriers like cultural beliefs, religion, geographical locations, race, ethnicity, and language. The emergence of globalization, immigration, and trade made multicultural communication inevitable. People from diverse cultures have to negotiate business deals and engage in other activities like socializing in a language each understands. This led to the development of multicultural communication.
Compare and Contrast Culture, Ethnicity, and Acculturation
Culture, ethnicity, and acculturation are closely related but distinctly different. Culture refers to a certain group of people's customs, ideas, and social behavior. Ethnicity is the state of belonging to a particular group of people that share a common culture, while acculturation is the process of a person being assimilated to a different culture, which is often the dominant one in a certain region. Acculturation leads to a shift in ethnic affiliation of the assimilated person. Therefore, the three concepts are related because they define a person's social life but are differentiated with the type of identity of a social group.
How Cultural and Religious Differences affect the Health Care Professional and the Issues that Arise in Cross-Cultural Communications
Culture influences interaction with healthcare providers, health experiences, and outcomes. Other cultures and religions may believe that sickness is a punishment from a supreme being like God, and the sick people should seek reconciliation with God to ensure they get well. For example, Islam believers do not eat pork. Implementing the new healthcare discovery of implanting pig tissues on human beings may face resistance from Muslims. Therefore, culture and religion are sources of ethical and moral guidelines in the healthcare sector and may influence healthcare outcomes.
Family Culture and its Effect on Patient Education
Family culture is also referred to as family tradition. It is a set of ideas, attitudes, ideas, and environments passed down by the family generations (Churganov et al., 2018). Parents inherit the culture from their ancestors and leave it integrated with their children, who pass it down to future generations.
