Motivations and Challenges in the Application of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare

* In your opinion, what are the motivations to apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the field of healthcare?
For the past decades, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is believed to change the whole field of healthcare. People believed that the use of these systems could help improve the system through different means, from augmenting the practitioner’s ability to detect diseases to increasing workflow efficiency within the workplace. These days, the need for developing an AI system that would fulfill these promises has become more apparent.
Accordingly, I believe that some of the reasons why the need for AI has become more apparent are the increasing (2) number of diseases, (2) complexity of the healthcare system, and (3) desire for better healthcare experience.
One of the main reasons for the increasing need for an AI system is the increasing number and variety of new diseases. Despite the significant leaps in healthcare system compared to the previous decades, a recent study conducted by the World Health Organization revealed that the variety and quantity of cases of chronic diseases has exponentially increased in the past decades CITATION Rag18 \l 1033 (Raghupathi & Raghupathi, 2018). Accordingly, the use of an integrated AI (i.e., AI and EHR integration) could help identify trends in real time as well as detect illnesses of patients early on.
Another reason for the increasing need of AI in the current healthcare system is the increasing complexity of the system itself. As compared to previous decades, the legislations, methods, and tools utilized in the provision of care has expanded. One example of which is the ‘boom’ of a variety of insurance policies that offers different premiums depending on the patient’s history and disease, among others. Thus, by using AI the implementation of the Electronic Health Record (EHR) would even become more efficient.
Lastly, using AI to augment administrative decisions in the field of healthcare could further improve its efficiency. For example, some technologies have noted that AI can be used to help in the ‘triaging’ process.
