Technology and Robots: Increasing Efficiency in Industries
1. Please read the "Introduction" section of our textbook Anatomy of a Robot by Despina Kakoudaki on amazon.com (as much as is there) until you receive the book. Continue on to the first chapter, "The Artificial Birth." There will be questions on the readings.

3. Think of one (1) film that you know of with a robot in it. What is the most moving or pivotal scene in the film pertaining to the robot? Be ready to discuss in class.
4. Bring in a hard copy of your 'research' blurb: What is the area of thought (psychology, technology, history) through which you see issues? Think about it as if your major (business, finance) is how you will see this course topic of 'robots.'

Introduction
Why are we obsessed with artificial people? Dr. Kakoudaki indicates that it is because, through their narrative and cultural employment, robots display what it means to be human. Among the fundamental fantasies that describe robots is the drive to characterize them as slaves. This is well illustrated by Data; a robot in an episode of Star Trek the next generation titled “The Measure of a Man.” As a result, robots can only be viewed from a technological point of view as they are manufactured to work for humans.

Through Anatomy of a Robot, Dr. Kakoudaki suggests that robots teach humans that being a human is a steady process and frequently a subject of philosophical and political tussle. Robot’s struggles are a result of four fundamental elements; the fantasy of artificial birth, the fantasy of mechanical body, the tendency to refer to robots as slaves, and the interpretation of artificiality as an existential trope. When the elements are combined, robots or artificial people meet all the qualifications of a perfect slave.
