With the increasing numbers of healthcare providers embracing health information technology (HIT), patients are creating and maintaining massive amounts of data in their health records (PHR). These incredible quantities of data have become invaluable for healthcare organizations as big data has considerable potential to facilitate the prediction of epidemic outbreaks, prevent disease, reduce the cost of healthcare delivery, improve quality of life and patient outcomes (Abouelmehdi et al., 2018). A frequent challenge that comes out of access to data is security and privacy of their data, and there is a need for provisions that need to be included in policy models that safeguard and guides how patients might use the data in making critical decisions regarding the privacy and security of data contained in their PHRs.
