Mental health promotion is an initiative designed to foster individual capabilities and mental strengths and reinforce the community's assets to deter mental illness. The initiative is also destined to enhance the well-being and value of life for individuals and societies. Positive psychology is studying abilities and properties or appropriate about people and positive attributes, mental assets, and strengths (Sharma, Sharma & Sharma, 2017). The mission of mental health promotion is to appreciate and foster influences that allow persons, the public, and civilizations to thrive. It supports the theories and approaches of individual and organizational discrepancies with philosophies and models of assets. Health promotion approaches include executing health-enhancing public programs, creating helpful environments, creating personal skills, and reorienting health facilities.
Individuals with mental health conditions experience more significant burdens than physical health conditions. These are usually driven by the inequalities experienced in seeking mental health. The inequalities that affect people with severe mental illness are influenced by various social and environmental determinants of poor health. These include poverty, joblessness, homelessness, and imprisonment (Jacquet et al., 2018). There is an aspect of stigma, discrimination, social isolation, and exclusion. There is also the aspect of increased actions that pose a risk to health, such as smoking and poor diets. Inequalities in the health system expose individuals with severe mental illness to limited access to timely and appropriate health assessments for early detection and intervention.
One fundamental principle featured in this study is to expand the knowledge base for mental health. The inequalities experienced in the health sector tend to be prevalent following the limited knowledge about mental health and how it can be countered. There is limited information on how victims of severe mental health can better their condition or how individuals and society can view the condition (Johnson & Possemato, 2019).
