Medical coding specialists handle very sensitive data as part of their main responsibilities. This data contains information regarding the healthcare provider, patient, and insurance service, provider. This makes them responsible for ensuring electronic data security and hardcopy transfer of this data between the concerned parties. There are guidelines and compliances requirements that are legislated by regulatory bodies such as the Office of the Inspector General and also constitutional acts. These guidelines were set to ensure the security and privacy of patients' records. This paper will look at these guidelines that protect patient's data from errors and the consequences that accompany these errors.
