According to the Public Health Law Section 2401 of New York State, all health care providers are required to inform the Department of Health about cancer or other malignant disease cases (Department of Health, 2015). This is done through the Cancer Registry which allows the Department to collect, process and report information about those residents who have been diagnosed with the disease.
The data from the Cancer Registry is utilized by programs that run within the Department of Health, patient advocacy groups, and researchers. The data is used to plan and evaluate public health and for research purposes on cancer. Cancer Registry data is important since it is used by researchers in identifying the possible causes of cancer. The researchers use the data to identify those patients who can provide information on the exposures they had before. They can also use this data to determine the groups that are at risk of being diagnosed with cancer (Parkin, 2008).
