Quantitative Research Critique: Part One
Title
The title of the study by Pace, et al. (2012) is: Testing the reliability and efficiency of the pilot Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool (MMAT) for systematic mixed studies review. According to Moule, Aveyard, and Goodman (2017), a good title should be clear, informative and should indicate the type of approach used in the study. This title indicates the approach, which is a pilot study, and informs the reader what the study is all about in a clear manner.
Abstract
The abstract of the study is effective because it gives a clear and brief overview of what the study entails. According to Moule, Aveyard, and Goodman (2017), a useful abstract should indicate in summary, the problem, method, results, and conclusion of the study. The abstract of the study by Pace et al. Further, the aim/ objective of the study is consistent with the research topic being studied.
Statement of the Problem
The research problem is not clearly stated in the study. However, it has been identified in the abstract: It can be challenging to appraise studies that have adopted mixed methods, which prompted the need to develop an appraisal tool that can mitigate this challenge (Pace et al., 2012).
Research Questions/ Hypothesis
There are no research questions or hypothesis explicitly stated in the study. However, it is possible to deduce the research question that the study sought to answer, which in this case is: Is the MMAT efficient and reliable in appraising mixed studies?
Literature Review
The references used in a study should be recent, and the literature review should highlight the gaps that the researchers intend to fill with their study (Moule, Aveyard, & Goodman, 2017). However, some of the literature reviewed in the study by Pace et al. (2012) is too old, with some studies going back as far as 1977. Further, the research gaps that the study sought to fill have not been highlighted. The literature reviewed in the study is however relevant to the topic, with some of the literature addressing the appraisal of mixed studies and its challenges.
Conceptual Framework
