What is Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs Theory?
Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory is a psychological theory that defines human motivation. This motivation is based on different levels of needs. It is made up of a five-tier model that defines human needs; the theory points out that there is a hierarchical order that dictates the motivation of human beings (Corporate Finance Institute, 2020). This hierarchy begins with the most basic to the most advanced need. The fifth level of the hierarchy serves as the ultimate goal. The level is known as self-actualization. Often, the needs that are lower in the hierarchy should be satisfied before needs that are higher in the hierarchy. The needs are physiological, safety, love and belonging, and self-actualization.

The hierarchy has five levels. They begin from the most basic to the most advanced. The modern perspective shows that these levels may overlap. The motivation of an individual is directed more towards the different levels as they pursue higher levels (Mcleod, 2007).
Physiological Needs: They are at the bottom of the hierarchy. These are the essential needs that are critical for the survival of an individual (Mcleod, 2007). Some physiological needs include the need for food, rest, shelter, warmth, and rest. Motivation at this level is derived from the inherent instinct of survival (Mcleod, 2007).
Safety Needs: The second level in the hierarchy is safety needs. These needs relate to a person's need to feel secure and safe in the environment they are in (Mcleod, 2007). The motivation for safety needs is derived from the need for law, protection, and order. Currently, there are various examples of safety needs. For an individual to find security, they must consider their safety, both physical and mental. Particularly, this means protecting themselves from harmful elements (Mcleod, 2007).
