Kidney stones and gallstones
These are major illnesses among adults especially women that cause emergency room admissions for abdominal pains in most of our hospitals. These affect most people who seek emergency care and treatment due to its severity. The two conditions mostly affect the gallbladder or the bile duct as a result of chemical imbalance causing them to malfunction and severe abdominal pains. The two are closely related and this paper seeks to discuss their causes, symptoms, treatment and prevention.
Causes of kidney stones and gallstones
The two illnesses are majorly caused by chemical imbalances in the gallbladder or bile duct. They occur when chemicals like cholesterol, calcium, bilirubinate and calcium carbonate harden to form small stones, which later complicate to greater health risks. Other causes of the conditions include overweight or obesity among women and children, losing of weight to a great extent, sedentary lifestyles, high blood pressure, use of contraceptives among women, high fat-dietary intake, age, diabetic people, statin drugs for lowering cholesterol levels, liver diseases, genetics, low fibre-diet, and age mostly 40 years and above (Turney et al., 2014). These conditions present predisposing factors for these conditions that end up escalating to higher levels among the people as the years go by.
Symptoms of Kidney Stones and Gallstones
The illnesses do not present clear symptoms but various signs can be noticed. These include a feeling of excruciating pain below the ribs, backaches, pain in the right shoulder, increased sweating and nausea, restlessness, strong fever, colicky pain, abdominal pains, pain when urinating, blood stained urine, pink, red or brown urine and the urge to urinate frequently and vomiting. In complicated conditions symptoms like inflammation of the gallbladder, blocking of the bile duct and the pancreatic duct and lastly gallbladder cancer may be witnessed at advanced stages. Patients are advised to seek medical care as soon as they witness these symptoms in their bodies to prevent the illnesses advancing to higher levels, which are dangerous and difficult to treat (Turney et al., 2014).
