Respond to the following Student (Peer Response): Major vitamins and minerals required by the body and the general functions they serve.
Research:
There are many major vitamins and minerals needed to sustain a healthy body. Yes, we get a lot of our vitamins and minerals from what we consume daily with foods. Proper vitamin intake can be obtained through healthy eating habits and eating nutrient-dense foods. Vitamins and minerals are extremely vital to the development and function of the body normally. Vitamins are organic, which means plants or animals produce them. The two categories that vitamins fall under are “water-soluble” and “fat-soluble.” The fat-soluble are A, D, E, and K. These vitamins dissolve into fats and are stored in the body. The water-soluble consist of the complex vitamins C and B such as B6, B12, niacin, riboflavin, and folate. These vitamins do not stay in the body. Therefore, they must be restored every day. Minerals, on the other hand, are not organic. They are inorganic. Therefore, minerals come from soil and water. Minerals are eaten by animals or absorbed by plants. The body must obtain a large amount of minerals needed such as calcium, iron, fluoride, sodium, phosphorus, potassium, chloride, magnesium, zinc, iodine, sulfur, cobalt, copper, manganese, and selenium. Those listed are all minerals essential for maintaining health, growth, and staying healthy. (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. 2018)
Critical Thinking:
The intake of vitamins and minerals is essential daily. Vitamins are essential to the growth and development of your body. Relating to this topic, I have an iron deficiency and must take iron pills every day. On the days I forgot to take my iron medication, I notice the difference in my body. Low iron is dangerous and causes horrible symptoms. A person who is iron-deficient experiences fatigue, weakness, headaches, and irregular heartbeats. Any vitamin and mineral deficiencies could cause a plethora of symptoms; however, to avoid these issues you must beware of your body’s vitamin intake and what you eat. Therefore, if you are not eating healthy food, please remember to take your vitamins. It is also worth mentioning that making sure that your children and teens have the proper vitamins and mineral intake daily. This is especially important for their growth and development as well.
