What is nursing informatics. Health, Medicine, Nursing Essay (Essay Sample)

As you begin this course, consider what exactly nursing informatics is. Although it is not a completely new profession, it has dramatically expanded with the introduction of the electronic health record and increases in health care technology. According to McGonigle and Mastrian (2018), nursing informatics is a specialty that includes nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. As you read chapters 1, 2, 5, 21 & 22 this week, consider the discussion question:
Discuss ways that nursing informatics could be applied to all areas of professional nursing practice, including clinical practice, administration, education, and research. Provide examples of each. What do you see as the biggest significance of nursing informatics, and why?
Remember, nursing practice is not all clinical practice. As you consider informatics, think also of how it can be used in settings other than the health care setting. How are we using it in education (this course or another nurse course you have been in), for example? How would it be used by a nurse manager who is not at the bedside? How about the nurse researcher - is informatics important to them? If so, how?
Below is the name of the textbook we are asked to refer.
McGonigle, D. & Mastrian, K. (2018). Nursing informatics and the foundation of knowledge (4th ed.). Burlington, MA: Jones and Bartlett.

Healthcare has continued to evolve in an increasingly competitive marketplace, and knowledge workers need to be well prepared to make a significant contribution by enabling timely and appropriate information. Nursing informatics is a scientific synthesis of information in nursing practice, which involves concepts in computer science, nursing science, and cognitive science. As many professionals continue to access, use, and develop information in advancing nursing science for better patient care, nursing informatics has witnessed a tremendous evolution (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). As nursing science influences every aspect of nursing practice, it relates to typical nursing practice roles, nursing informatics, education, and research.
