As you begin this course, consider what exactly nursing informatics is. Although it is not a completely new profession, it has dramatically expanded with the introduction of the electronic health record and increases in health care technology. According to McGonigle and Mastrian (2018), nursing informatics is a specialty that includes nursing science, computer science, and information science to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. As you read chapters 1, 2, 5, 21 & 22 this week, consider the discussion question:
Discuss ways that nursing informatics could be applied to all areas of professional nursing practice, including clinical practice, administration, education, and research. Provide examples of each. What do you see as the biggest significance of nursing informatics, and why?
Remember, nursing practice is not all clinical practice. As you consider informatics, think also of how it can be used in settings other than the health care setting. How are we using it in education (this course or another nurse course you have been in), for example? How would it be used by a nurse manager who is not at the bedside? How about the nurse researcher - is informatics important to them? If so, how?

There is a relationship between nursing practice and informatics. For this reason, nursing informatics has become a key influencer in nursing practice in different roles, and nurses need to embrace nursing science as knowledge managers, developers, engineers, workers, and users.
In nursing practice, information systems often encompass the development, use, and management of IT infrastructure in a healthcare organization. These information systems acquire inputs or data and process it by retrieving, analyzing, synthesizing, disseminating, and providing responses or feedbacks (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018). It is critical to develop and refine robust, functional, and visionary information systems to attain better-prepared systems in handling future knowledge and information needs in the healthcare industry. Technology has continued to play a critical role in education and nursing practice. Studying nurses' role and highlighting the need for appropriate information systems educational programs in integrating with the ever-increasing pace of technological advancements are necessary (Darvish et al., 2014).
