Main Concepts
The main concepts tackled in class generally involve cases on ethical principles in health care and cases that violate the laws concerning legal medicine. The topics explained the significance of the deep understanding of laws and ethical principles of ethics and legal medicine in health care to understand the difference between right and wrong. Some of the discussions involved administrative, civil, and criminal cases filed against individuals in the health care field or the institution (i.e., hospital, clinic) because of the violations against the law. Others include sexual harassment in the medical setting and the importance of patient consent.
One of the cases was the liabilities charged against Benevis and Kool Smiles Dental Clinics which was due to the wrongful submission of medical claims to the Medicaid programs. The dental clinic committed fraud which led to the unnecessary procedures performed to children who availed their services (Whistleblower Attorneys, 2016).
Insights
From the lessons discussed in class, I have learned that medical professionals must be aware of the law and mindful of the ethical principles to prevent incurring administrative, civil, and criminal charges from the patients of clients. One of the most important concepts in health care is “patient consent” where every aspect of health care service provided must be reviewed and explained well to the patient before the execution. Moreover, it is best to have a written consent instead of verbal consent to have a piece of ample evidence when the situation needs so. Without patient consent, one must never perform any medical services for the patient unless it is an emergency case and the patient is unconscious or there is no guardian available at the time.
