Notably, there have been efforts in the United States to minimize healthcare disparities by 2020. However, there healthcare disparities, which include risk factors, access to health services, morbidity and mortality are present in vulnerable populations. Immigrants are among vulnerable populations. There are several factors, which affect immigrants’ vulnerability, and they include their socio-economic background, immigration status, local policies on accessibility to funded health care and marginalization (Wolf, 2008). Based on this, immigrants are at increased risk for poor physical and social health outcomes. From the healthcare perspective, social marginalization, resources and political marginalization shape their vulnerability. In the United States, immigrants represent a sizeable health population, which makes up to 12 percent of the entire US population. Evidence shows that, most immigrants experience deteriorating health outcomes, mainly because of poor access to healthcare, which results due to policy restrictions. As such, many immigrants in the US remain undocumented; hence, they are not eligible for insurance coverage. Immigrants are a special group of individuals in the United States who cannot access healthcare services in entirety; thus, they must pay for these healthcare services. Considering the stringent measures that restrict the eligibility of immigrants to work, this becomes an important issue to address (Derose, Escarce, & Lurie, 2007).

The legal status is important as it facilitates accessibility to social services in the United States. The immigration status is not a legal status; hence, immigrants have low rates of health insurance coverage.
