Born in 1925, Madeleine Leininger was a nursing professor and theorist. She developed the concept of transcultural nursing, and from 1961 onward, her contributions to nursing became the talk of the town. In the 1950s, while working in a childcare center, Madeleine Leininger observed that children were showing recurrent behaviors due to their cultural differences. She soon identified that there was a lack of cultural and care knowledge, meaning nurses were unaware of how important it is to look at the cultural differences of patients while providing them with care or medications. She also described that some nurses were unable to provide proper treatment services to patients because of having little or no understanding of different cultures. This led Madeleine Leininger to develop the theory of Transcultural Nursing. This theory is also called the Culture Care Theory. The main focus of this theory is on fitting nurses in medical centers where they are able to understand the health outcomes depending on similar or different cultural backgrounds of patients. There are three different modes of Madeleine Leininger’s culture care theory. All of them are meant to ease nursing judgments, interventions, and actions and provide nurses and other medical experts a way to understand the cultural requirements of patients before and during the provision of care.
The first mode of care is preservation or maintenance. Its best example is the Canadian hospitals where nurses help patients preserve their cultural, traditional, social, religious or moral values while providing them with proper care or treatment facilities (Gustavsson, 2018).
