Introduction
Childhood obesity has been identified as one of the most severe medical conditions that affect children in the developing and developed countries. Obese children weigh more than they should give their height and age. There are several serious concerns on childhood obesity because it sets children on the path towards suffering diseases that were previously synonymous with adults-high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes. On most occasions, obese children whose family members have a history of obesity end up becoming obese as adults. Even though it is evident that effective strategies should be put in place to combat childhood obesity, there are still disagreements on how it is defined and insufficient evidence on the interventions to use to combat childhood obesity (Lakshman, Elks & Ong, 2012). Children with obesity can have high depression and low self-esteem. It is therefore important that to ensure that fast actions are taken to deal with childhood obesity. The purpose of this paper is to review the trends of childhood obesity and the risk factors associated with it and determine the strategies for dealing with the disease.
Literature review
In the US, the prevalence of childhood obesity has almost tripled since 1980 (Lakshman, Elks & Ong, 2012). Consequently, it could be more widespread today compared with adult obesity. There has been a staggering increase in the number of children with the highest percentiles of BMI. The society today has embraced a culture where people rarely engage in routine daily physical activities, and this has made energy to be dense. Additionally, there are low nutrient beverages and food that are more accessible and affordable, and this has made them more appealing than healthier options (Pandita et al., 2016). Among children, obesity risk factors include intakes of sugary beverages, dietary energy density, dietary fat, inadequate physical activity, short sleep duration and sedentary behaviors (Lakshman, Elks & Ong, 2012).
Reducing obesity, therefore, requires behavioral changes and modifications of the daily lifestyles. However, given the fact that the environment is the one contributing to both the healthy and unhealthy lifestyles, strategies that rely solely on the ability of individuals to control themselves will be ineffective.
Sahoo et al. (2015) argued that children tend to model their behaviors after what their parents do and this can contribute to the obesity of the children, especially if the parents engage in activities that do not encourage healthy lifestyles. Children normally have limited ability to determine healthy food options. As a result, they depend on what the environment they operate in provides them with. In order to help children to live an obesity-free life, there is a need to create an enabling environment for them Pandita et al., 2016). Much of the work must be done by the parents who must always ensure that they have proper mealtime structures, especially eating out together with their children as this is the best way through which they could monitor what they eat and give them advice accordingly (Sahoo et al., 2015).
