Nurses have a legal and ethical expectation of safeguarding the well-being of their patients when they are in the institution. In my previous practice, I got to take care of various patients with violent behaviors and others in palliative care. In several cases, I had to use restraints to ensure that a patient does not hurt themselves or other medical professionals attending to them. However, in agreement with the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) Best Practice Guidelines, I realized that with time restrained patients became more violent, agitated, and developed injuries from the cuffs. Also, the patients lost confidence in medical professionals and became less cooperative.
