Introduction
Change is the exercise of altering existing attitudes, skills, and procedures due to certain emerging problems. In the Nursing environment, change can be a result of challenges in the available healthcare systems. However, it can also be due to new technologies that are deemed efficient than the existing ones. To understand how change is undertaken in a nursing organization, several change theories have been put forward. Consequently, this paper compares and contrasts Lewin’s Change Theory and Roger’s Change Theory in the implementation of an EBP project.
Lewin's Change Theory versus Roger’s Change Theory
Lewin’s theory constitutes a three-stage model (unfreezing-moving-refreezing) that identifies and examines factors that influence change in an environment. Unfreezing involves helping people to let go of thir old habits while freezing involves making the change a daily routine. The moving stage involves a change in behavior, which is achieved by providing any relevant information and encouraging people to work with others. Lewin’s theory is based on the notion that leaders can successfully implement change if they strengthen the driving forces or weaken the resisting forces (Shirey, 2017). As a result, the success of Lewin’s theory depends on how fast prior knowledge is replaced by new knowledge.
On the other hand, Roger’s Change Theory is made up of 5 stages (knowledge, persuasion, decision, implementation, confirmation) and describes how people move from just having knowledge of an innovation to adopting the innovation. Under the first three stages (knowledge, persuasion, decision), the individual gathers relevant information about the innovation and analyzes the pros and cons of adopting the innovation.
