(Lombbardi, 2001) A good leader can inspire people to reach greater heights of performance and success. According to Murphy (2013), transformational leaders are visionary, self-confident, and self-aware in breaking professional boundaries to develop a multidisciplinary team approach towards patient care. These leaders inspire the followers and motivate them to exercise leadership by encouraging their belief that each has the potential to achieve high aims. Murphy also goes ahead to state that a transformational leader is 'the catalyst for creating new innovative organizational paradigms.' This leader is collaborative, consultative and seeks consensus while attributing power to interpersonal repertoires and contact'. This leadership allows the follower to develop ideas and aspirations on how things could be better in healthcare settings. It clarifies a vision for the betterment of the health services, therefore, allowing one to work towards raising the standards of care and treatment (Yammarino & Spangler, 1998).
Handy (1993) studies claim that certain persons have inborn leadership traits. This is about the many studies he conducted by the end of the 1950s exploring specific characteristics of effective leaders. The trait theory ascertains that effective leaders begin by believing in themselves. This includes a maturity, conviction, and expertise which translate to a purpose and direction.
