Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) is one formal role where a nurse is in a leadership position. The key responsibility of a chief nursing officer is to put in place measures that ensure patient safety and optimize nursing care (Stanley, 2018). Further, these leaders play a key role in ensuring that nurses are well coordinated so that each patient receives optimal care. Additionally, this officer may manage finances, oversee policy implementation, and be a liaison between the nursing team and the executive management. A nurse should typically have undergraduate and master's degrees to qualify for this role. In addition, the nurse should have at least 5 to 6 years in a clinical setting (Van et al., 2018). Leadership experience or skills is an added advantage to a nurse willing to occupy this position.
