The Chilean mine rescue is one of the most extraordinary events as far as disaster management and recovery goes. It indeed helped to highlight the great strengths and determination of humankind, especially when it comes to man’s bid to survive. A number of miners were trapped underground when the shafts came collapsing down on them, effectively locking out all the exits from the mine. The humanitarian efforts undertaken during the subsequent days to save the 33 trapped miners was a real manifestation of unwavering faith and efficiency of the rescue teams. Even more importantly though, was the leadership efforts from various quarters, from which a number of lessons can be learnt.
The first lesson is the importance of setting goals and objectives towards achieving a certain end. The president came out and outlined that the main objective was to get the trapped miners out, alive. He made sure that not only the rescue team, but the whole nation, understood that the rescue mission was the most important goal at that time (Rashid et.al. 2013). All efforts were therefore committed towards that endeavor. From a leadership perspective, setting up particular goals or objectives is usually of great importance, as it acts as a roadmap towards the achievement of specific targets. Having goals also ensures that one doesn’t veer off the set targets too much, or even if one veers off, there is a clear pathway to get back on track.
The second lesson is that of compassion and competence. The rescue team, led by the team leader, Urzua, carried out their duties with a lot of competence and compassion. She knew how to conduct the process, having been on the ground in person and overseeing the actual process. Her team reflected everything that she stood for; displaying a high level of competence for their job to ensure that all the miners came out alive and unscathed.
