Acute bronchitis is a viral infection that affects the lower part of the respiratory tract (Bronchi). The disease causes the bronchial walls to swell severely, leading to increased production of mucus and bronchus Edema (Editore, 2014). As the disease spreads, the patients begin to cough. The cough may result in the production of a yellow, green, clear and sometimes blood-tinged sputum.
The cough may be hacking and dry at first. But after a short period, it may contain mucus. Similarly, during an acute bronchitis infection, the bronchial- lining cells are irritated and this causes them to swell. It is this swelling together with the rise in mucus production that causes the narrowing of the airways (Editore, 2014). This consequently causes the production of a wheezing sound. The condition is treatable through the use of antibiotics.
