Ethnic and racial diversity in the United States is a profound phenomenon. While diversity is inevitable in a society, the banning of ethnic studies in schools presents a misconceived understanding of its aim. Achieving the American dream is paramount. However, infusing the different interests of racially diverse people through ethnic studies provides various benefits. Therefore, stating that racial differences breeds division is untrue in my opinion due to several reasons.
First, incorporating ethnic studies in schools perpetuates equality in a country already divided. Recent studies argue that the narratives and traditional sources of information, textbooks utilized are predominantly white. They give more attention to the whites through their storylines and presenting them in various roles that dominate the learning process. In contrast, groups such as the African Americans, the Latinos and Native Americans appear as supporters of the history if not its victims. Moreover, they tend to create a rift between racism in the past and in the present by presenting it as an affliction perpetrated by a few people as opposed to because of a systematic process. Consequently, with such a curriculum in place, significant revisions incorporates all students from different ethnic groups.
Second, the teaching of ethnic diversity is supported by the discovery that students’ achievements are directly related to their racial awareness and them identifying positively with one’s group.
