Issues in the Healthcare System
Employee turnover characterizes average staff losses in an organization in a certain period. In nursing, this poses a problem since there is an anticipated shortage of nurses in the country which generates an action to hire a new generation of nurses with more proposed incentives to increase the workforce in institutions. Several factors encourage the increase in employee turnover rate, especially in the adult setting, such as work satisfaction, schedule, and stress (Asegid, Belachew, & Yimam, 2014).
Job satisfaction mainly affects this issue. This is related to proficiency in producing high-quality work without compromising the opportunity to express creativity and receiving gratification in their profession. Frequently, employees feel underappreciated in a workplace due to vilifications over the appreciation of a job well done. Furthermore, poor work social relationships that hinder personal growth affects the self-fulfilment of the employee. Thus, adding to the increase in employee turnover rate (Asegid, Belachew, & Yimam, 2014).
Another issue in healthcare settings is the layoffs in the health industry, secondary to a decrease in overall revenue. A good example is the layoffs or pay cuts due to the pandemic brought by COVID-19. According to Gabler, Montague, & Ashford (2020), several hospitals cannot sustain their administration secondary to the lack of income and the increase in the outgoing of cash CITATION Gab20 \l 1033 (Gabler, Montague, & Ashford, 2020). Thus, bringing global economic turmoil (Koshle, Kaur, & Basista, 2020).
Impact of the Issues in the Department
Poor job satisfaction rates significantly decreased the quality of work of the health staff. Due to this, hospital staff provides a low-quality of care to the patients. In turn, this poses an increased risk in negligence that may compromise patient safety and satisfaction (Tekingündüz, Top, Tengilimoğlu, & Karabulut, 2017).
On the other hand, the layoffs brought by the pandemic displaced several healthcare workers to different areas. It is not only applicable to the medical professionals but also to the medical personnel who are responsible for the administrative work. This causes a decrease in the benefits received and a more or less twenty per cent decrease in the salary despite the occupational hazard CITATION Leo20 \l 1033 (Leonard, 2020). Additionally, a decline in hospital staff due to layoffs poses a great risk to the patients due to the underqualified services that may be given secondary to the decrease in the hospital workforce (Trevor & Piyanontalee, 2020). This may hinder the fast recovery of the patients or worse; it may result in negligence because of the additional job stress. Furthermore, the employees who were not included in the layoffs show a decrease in productivity and efficiency because of overworking and underpayment CITATION Leo20 \l 1033 (Leonard, 2020).
Ways to Improve the Situation
The main factor that needs attention to solve the issue on employee turnover rate is the work environment. It has been found that the most effective action in managing this is t...
