IOM Future of Nursing Report and Nursing
The Work of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee Initiative
In its work, the Committee on the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Initiative on the Future of Nursing at the Institute of Medicine (IOM) designed ideas for transforming the healthcare sector. The committee envisioned a future healthcare system inclined to expand medical services access to diversified populations across the United States (US). Within that context, the future medical sector would deliberately prevent illnesses, enhance health and wellness, and offer increasingly compassionate care geared towards improving the treatment outcomes for individuals across their lifespans. Accordingly, the committee envisioned a future system where preventive initiatives and primary care are the key drivers. Within this envisioned future, interprofessional synchronization and engagement would characterize healthcare professional’s practice environment. The ultimate point is anchored on the need for helpful staff planning as well as policy formulation to facilitate improved data gathering processes and an enhanced information resources organization (Institute of Medicine, 2011).
The key messages have influenced nursing education in various ways. The IOM recommended that 80 percent of nurses should attain baccalaureate degrees by 2020. In that vein, the Campaign for Action’s indicators suggests that the number of BSN-prepared nursing professionals has increased. In 2010, 49 percent of working nursing had BSN qualifications compared to 56 percent in 2017. New York, for example, passed the law requiring newly licensed registered nurses to have a BSN degree in ten years of their first licensure.
