Introduction
The Impact of Report on Education by the Institute of Medicine (IOM)
Current change in health care reforms (2010), which was about an Affordable Care Act (ACA), has led to increase in demand for quality, affordable, and a safe patient-centered as well as accessible care in the areas that involves community, and also public health and geriatrics (Institute of Medicine, 2010). For this reform to be successful, the Institute of Medicine’s report of the year 2010, which was about nursing future; Leading Change and Advancement of Health, is inviting the nurses to widen their role in the achievement of higher education, attainment of competency in leadership, research and a practice based on the practice of collaboration with his or her team members to establish high quality labor force. There is also a need for reexamination and evolvement of new emerging competencies in ensuring that there is a shift in care needs as well as improvement in technology. It would be important to remember that report of 2010 presented a recommendation to allow nurses advance in their education and training so as to practice in meeting challenges and demands of different public needs for health care in the future. The report also stated that there should be proportional increase of nurses in relation with BSN up to 80 percent in the next ten years. It was also proposed that by the next ten years the number of nurses in the practice with doctorate degrees should be doubled in the next ten years. There should also be improvement in the education system to enhance promotion of seamless academic transformation (American Association of Colleges of Nurses, 2011).
The IOM Report on Nursing Practice
Report by the IOM on nursing also proposed that there should be a lifelong learning education program to make sure that there is continuity of competency education through the lifespan. This can be done through providing APRNs to the full extent of practice within their sphere of practice. There should also be provision of opportunities so as to diffuse successful practice in a collaborative effort and leadership. In the report it was suggested that by promoting furthering of education by nurses, these nurses will be better equipped to be able to facilitate the partnership among nurses, physicians, and other healthcare professionals so as to promote safe and proper health care.
