Abstract
Workplace violence and bullying is a problem that affects the nursing, demeans the profession, and puts the patients’ safety at risk. Perpetrators of violence can now be charged with felonies in the state of Texas for assaults, and this highlights the gravity of the problem. Experiencing workplace violence at my workplace in a12 bed Medical Intensive Care Unit in the Dallas/Fort Worth area is a concern, and there is a need to find a lasting solution. There is also a risk of claims lodged against nursing facilities resulting from workplace violence, low morale and high turnover. In the case of Texas, there is a need for stiffer penalties focusing on workplace violence as a felony rather than a Class A misdemeanor penalty. Additionally, efforts should be made to change the culture that abets workplace violence, and formation of committees and programs to address violence influences the workplace culture.
