Nurses must be closely involved in the process of purchasing and implementing new health information technology systems. Failure to include nurses at the various levels of the systems development cycle may have dire consequences in healthcare delivery. Failure to involve nurses at the planning stage may lead to the formation of a system that does not take care of the unique needs of a nurse (Garcia et al., 2019). For instance, failure to involve the nurses at this stage may lead to the formation of a system that does not provide nurses with the capability to provide their feedback about a patient. Assuming that the system being made aims at enabling the collaboration of the different members of the care team in patient care, leaving out the capability of nurses to give their feedback would be a negative consequence. The inclusion of nurses in the planning stage would help the development team realize a need to include the system capability described above.
It is also crucial to include nurses in the system analysis stage. At this stage, the functional requirements of the project are considered. There are ramifications for leaving out the nurses while considering the functional components of a system. In a situation where the project involves moving from an old system to a newer one, failure to involve the nurses may lead to an inconveniencing system. Here is an example.
