Introduction
The nursing profession plays a crucial and auxiliary role in the health sector. The nursing field has over the years experienced growth which has created needs that ought to be addressed. In 2008, IOM together with other stakeholders deliberated on some key points aimed at improving the nursing sector and to ensure that the gap that currently exists is filled up. All of the key points were given timelines within which they should be achieved. This paper has looked at some of those key deliberations and steps that are to be taken to ensure that they are realized
Increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80% by 2020
One of the recommendations is to have an increase in the number of nurses holding degrees by the year 2020 (Institute of Medicine, 2011). This is achievable considering that the timeline given is 12 years. Most nurses in various countries normally take a preliminary nursing course which is highly integrated. In some curriculums, it is a diploma course, while for others it is certificate course. However, the tailoring of the curriculum is such that it is well integrated to ensure that the nurses are well equipped with relevant modern day information useful to their field. As such, undertaking a degree course will take a shorter period than usual as the nurses are likely to be exempted form some of the basic courses (Caputi, 2014). As a nurse, I see myself fitting well within this recommendation and being able to achieve this goal within the set deadline.
