Problem Statement
Minority nurses continue to experience underrepresentation despite the need to increase diversity in the nursing profession. The lack of cultural competence within the educators could be contributing to the high attrition rate of minority students.
Statement of Purpose
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between the educators’ cultural competence and the recruitment and graduation of minority nursing students and how these competence levels affect the graduation of minority students.
Research Question(s)/ Hypothesis
Does the level of educators’ cultural competence have an effect on the recruitment and graduation of minority students? Is there a need for an increase in cultural competence levels in nursing institutions?
Study Methods
The methods of data collection for this study will be based on questionnaires. Nurse educators in selected accredited colleges of nursing will be requested to complete the Cultural Diversity Questionnaire for Nurse Educators. Results from these questionnaires will then be put in scores in order to obtain mean cultural competence scores that will be compared to the percentage of minority students that have graduated from these schools. Data about the students will be based on school records showing how many minority students have graduated from these schools over a certain period of time. Quantitative statistical techniques like regression and correlation will then be used to come up with a statistical correlation between the mean cultural competence scores and the percentage of minority students that graduated from these colleges.
Key Findings
The lack of cultural competence in nursing institutions led to the underrepresentation of minority nursing students.
