Impact of Ebola Among Americans Aged 25-30 (Research Proposal Outline )
* Introduction
Ї A team of Chinese medical doctors attending to Ebola virus disease (EVD) patients between October 2014 and March 2015 in Sierra Leone reported severe symptoms of the disease and greater mortality rates among older patients.
Ї 77.78% of the cases had a severe fever, 64.93% with fatigue, 64.58% with abdominal pain, 62.85% with headache, and 61.81% with diarrhea.
Ї 98 out of 288 patients who were confirmed with the disease died, 36 recovered, while 154 missed follow-ups.
Ї Besides viral load and diarrhea, age was significantly correlated with higher mortality rates and shorter survival duration among EVD patients (Li et al., 2016).
Ї In late 2014, perceived vulnerability and self-efficacy among the aged population were reported as leading factors that drove Americans to avoid travels due to confirmed cases of EVD (Cahyanto et al., 2016).
* Problem statement
Ї The fear of Ebola contraction significantly lowers international travel among Americans aged 25-30
* Null hypothesis
Ї H1. Age increases the fear of Ebola contraction and ultimately lowers international travel among Americans aged 25-30.
* Alternative hypothesis
Ї H2. Perceived self-efficacy and vulnerability to EVD leads to travel abstinence
Ї H3. Subjective knowledge of EVD results in lower international travel.
* Purpose of study
Ї To find out the impact of EVD on the international travels of Americans aged between 25 and 30.
Ї Map the perceptions of Americans aged 25 and 30 on travel avoidance during pandemics such as EVD.
Ї Provide recommendations for the tourism, hotel, and airline industry in planning and responding to similar pandemics in the future.
* Literature review
Cahyanto, I., Wiblishauser, M., Penniton-Gray, L., & Schoeder, A. (2016). The dynamics of travel avoidance: The case of Ebola in the U.S. Elsevier Public Health Emergency Collection, 20, 195-203. https://dx.doi.org/10.1016%2Fj.tmp.2016.09.004
The study examines factors that led many Americans to avoid domestic travels following the confirmation of EVD cases in the United States towards the close of 2014. Using a Health Belief Model and data obtained from 1613 Americans through an online survey, the study reports that self-efficacy and perceived susceptibility were influential factors leading to travel avoidance. Besides, the investigators report that age, gender, and subjective knowledge contributed to travel abstinence during this period. This paper will be used in the present study to support the hypothesis that the fear of EVD contraction could lower international travel among Americans between 25 and 30 years of age.
