Proper eating, appropriate physical exercise and minimum stress are important determinants of health in people above 65 years. Most old adults suffer from involuntary weight loss due to deficiencies in specific vitamins and decreased dietary intake. However, weight loss in old people may not be easily recognized, since it is also associated with age related reductions in muscle mass. More so, old people suffer from stress due to being neglected and being lonely most of the time.
Proper counseling must be done before administering treatment, to elderly patient suffering from involuntary weight loss. According to Cereda & Klersy (2015), elderly patients require intensive and expansive research of their conditions, due to their inactive nature. Food consumption declines in old people, due to low appetite levels leading to loss of weight. Hence, I recommend nutritional supplements such as high energy drinks. The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for protein is 0.8 g of proteins/kg body weight regardless of age.
