Black women have been subject to various forms of discrimination and oppression, including slavery, racial segregation, and gender inequality. Black women have played important roles in social and political movements, including the civil rights and feminist movements (Lorde, 2021). Despite their contributions, Black women continue to face educational, employment, and healthcare disparities and are often subject to stereotypes and negative media portrayals. The intersection of race and gender further complicates the experiences of Black women and underscores the need for inclusive and intersectional approaches to addressing issues that affect them. Specifically, Black women often face nutrition-related health disparities. Nutrition interventions can significantly reduce the incidence of disease and improve health outcomes in this community.
The following articles all highlight different aspects of the relationship between nutrition and health outcomes in Black women’s communities. One article emphasizes the challenges Black women face with a dual diagnosis of HIV/AIDS and a nutrition-related chronic disease in accessing healthcare services (Mahadevan et al., 2023).
