Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal
I. New Practice Approaches
Undertaking my practicum gave me an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge and develop new skills, especially in providing care within a hospice setting. Throughout my practicum, I observed that individuals had to have skills and knowledge when managing an invalid’s pain and symptoms. Particularly, I discovered that individuals must discern the optimal measures that would be effective in managing pain in invalids and the measures that would be effective in improving normal bodily functions, nutritional intake, and mobility. Through the practicum, I realized that one had to be skilled to assist the invalids within the hospice especially in the emotional and psychological aspects. Additionally, I learned that nurses were required to make daily assessments regarding a convalescent’s ability and consult the convalescent to decide on which support is needed. I discovered through this practicum that I needed to plan and anticipate for future developments by applying my skills and technical knowledge.
II. Intraprofessional Collaboration
Tasks in health care settings are often complex, burdensome, and multifaceted for one professional to accomplish. One issue may require the input of various other individuals from different areas of specialty (Sullivan et al. 2015). This is an interesting learning experience that I observed. During my practicum, I discovered the importance of Intraprofessional collaboration within a hospital setting. I realized that through Intraprofessional collaboration, the hospital unit which comprised of chaplains, nurses, bereavement counselors, physicians, pharmacists, and dieticians successfully associated with each other as they discussed ideas regarding the treatment of a convalescent and methods of increasing comfort for hospitalized patients. Because of Intraprofessional collaboration, I observed that several members in the hospital’s disciplinary team worked jointly, which led to a significant improvement in the invalid’s state. Since members within the interdisciplinary team shared ideas on how patients’ needs would be met, relevant solutions were easily arrived at. While working in this setting, I actively participated in hospital activities which were designed to determine the most appropriate methods of managing and alleviating pain among convalescents. This kind of Intraprofessional collaboration made it easy to determine the optimal methodology for managing and alleviating pain in convalescing patients. This caused a huge improvement in the outcome of convalescents.
III. Healthcare Delivery and Clinical Systems
During the practicum, the experience I had helped me realize that it was inherently designed to palliate the sufferings of people that we are dealing with life-limiting illnesses. The hospital concentrated on the palliation of physical, emotional, and psychological affliction.
